References and further practice

The standard textbooks behind this course, and where to find matching chapters and extra problems.

Textbooks

  1. H. C. Verma, Concepts of Physics, Volumes 1 and 2 (Bharati Bhawan). Each chapter has worked examples, then Questions for Short Answer, Objective I, Objective II and Exercises. It is the best source of extra practice for this course.
  2. D. Halliday, R. Resnick and J. Walker, Fundamentals of Physics, 10th edition (Wiley). The standard first-year text. Its chapters follow almost the same order as these notes.
  3. H. D. Young and R. A. Freedman, University Physics with Modern Physics (Pearson). A good alternative with especially clear worked examples.
  4. R. A. Serway and J. W. Jewett, Physics for Scientists and Engineers (Cengage). Another standard calculus-based text.

All worked examples and practice problems in these notes are original. The books above are recommended for further reading and practice.

Using H. C. Verma for extra practice

For each chapter of these notes, work through the matching Verma chapter in this order:

  1. Questions for Short Answer. Use these for discussion and to check your understanding of the concepts. Teachers can use them as in-class prompts.
  2. Objective I (exactly one correct option) and Objective II (one or more correct options). Use these as quick timed self-tests.
  3. Exercises. These are numerical problems that rise steadily in difficulty. The later exercises in each chapter are at or beyond the level of our Level C problems.

Teachers can set problems from the Exercises directly as homework alongside the Level B and Level C problems in these notes.
